Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 31, 2026
Backscroll is built so that your browsing stays yours. This policy is written to be read, not to hide behind. We split it cleanly into the two things that matter: your reading, which never leaves your device, and your payment, which is handled by a trusted processor.
When you read a page, Backscroll extracts its content, turns it into searchable meaning, and stores that index only in your browser's local storage. The page text, the extracted content, the meaning vectors, and the search index are never transmitted to us or to anyone else. The language model that powers this is bundled inside the extension and runs locally, so the capture, understanding, and search paths make no network requests at all. You can verify this yourself by opening your browser's developer tools and watching the network tab while you search.
You are always in control. You can pause capture globally, exclude any site, delete the record for a single page or a single site, or erase everything with one click. Deleting removes the local data permanently.
Backscroll is a paid product after a free trial of your first 30 indexed pages. When you subscribe or buy a lifetime license, payment is handled by Stripe, our payment processor. To complete a purchase, Stripe collects the information it needs to charge you, such as your email address and card details. We receive from Stripe only what we need to know whether your license is active, such as your email, your plan, and the status of your subscription. We never send Stripe, or anyone, any of your browsing data. Stripe's handling of payment information is governed by Stripe's own privacy policy.
To keep the extension unlocked, it periodically checks whether your license is active by sending an anonymous license token to our billing service. That request contains no browsing content of any kind.
Because Backscroll is a paid product with a real checkout, we do collect the payment and license information described above. We do not claim to collect nothing, because that would not be true. What is true, and what matters, is this: your browsing never leaves your device.
Your browsing index lives on your device and is deleted when you delete it or remove the extension. License and billing records are retained by us and by Stripe for as long as needed to provide the service and to meet legal and accounting obligations. To request deletion of your billing record, or to ask any question about your data, email us at the address below.
Backscroll is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their information.
If we change this policy we will update the date above and, for material changes, note it in the extension or on this page.
